Two key points: Despite the scandal get a diesel that's had the software fix. It drives the same as before the fix, mileage goes down by 1 mpg but it gets a longer warranty.
The diesel has the immense torque to tow and confidently merge onto the highway. Second, be willing to tolerate a somewhat outdated telematics system.
